Total Structures' Holds Second
Annual Outdoor Structure Workshop
news  /  recent news  /  Total Structures Holds Second Annual Outdoor Structure Workshop

Back in March 2012 Total Structures’ hosted its first ever Outdoor Structure Workshop with the focus of the educational event firmly on aluminum temporary stage roof and ground support systems. This past
month Total Structures were pleased to host their 2013 offering, held yet again in the hometown of their headquarters, Ventura, California.

The primary objectives for this ETCP Certified event were safety, education, and to promote discussion within the industry on the correct use of such structures.

The workshop, targeted toward owners and users of outdoor structures, covered topics including system design and engineering, equipment inspection and maintenance, risk assessment, and wind and weather hazard preparations.

Held near the company’s headquarters and factory, this workshop was extremely well attended by a good cross section of the industry, from owner operators, to union stagehands, to employees of household name multi-nationals.The main two-day workshop offered an all-star cast of presenters including Jeff Reder, self-confessedroof geek and principle at Clark-Reder Engineering, Adrian Forbes-Black, Vice President of Total Structures, Tim Roberts, Director and Senior Adviser of The Event Safety Shop (TESS) and David VandenHeuvel, Senior Vice President of Weather Decision Technologies - WeatherOps.

Following the first two days of the event attendees had the option to continue their education by attending a further two days of tuition focused on the industry workhorse Columbus McKinnon (CM) Lodestar. Taught by CM Instructor, Dave Carmack, the CM Lodestar Road Technician class covered the proper use and maintenance of the CM Lodestar and Prostar product, with guided disassembly and reassembly of a one-ton Lodestar and a half-ton Prostar. At the conclusion of the class the attendees were asked to complete a written examination, which would judge their suitability for the qualification.

Throughout the event the attendees were kept occupied with hosted lunches and dinners including a dinner tour of the Total Structures factory and its first ever Karting Grand Prix, which was won by Adam Burghout of AV Concepts, closely followed by Chris Marin of Branam Enterprises and Total Structures’ own Adrian Forbes-Black.

“Last year we had to turn people away who wanted to attend the event so it was an obvious decision to hold more training events” commented Forbes-Black. “We held a compressed two day class in Vegas before LDI last November which was just as popular, therefore the need to do something again in Ventura, where we can expend on the content, was a no-brainer.”

The workshop was sponsored and supported by Dirty Rigger Gloves and Accessories and Skjonberg Controls who all provided representatives and product to aid in the instructional process. Forbes-Black added “With all the recent developments ands changes in our side of the industry I think the need for constant evolution and development is a necessity and we are obviously extremely proud to be considered a resource for such.”

Total Structures will be holding another two-day training event the week of November 18th 2013, which will be held in Las Vegas and will coincide with the LDI trade show. Interested parties can obtain
