Omni - Product of the Year - LDI 2001 (11-10-01)
news  /  archive library  /  Omni - Product of the Year - LDI 2001

Last year we introduced prototypes of a new truss connection system we call OMNI, a fork and spade connector that uniquely allows three degrees of freedom of movement. What we showed was just a taste of what the connector is capable of, and whilst it has become our fastest selling new product ever, this year we hoped to educate the market as to its full potential and introduce the accessories that complete the system that had not yet been developed last year. (Please note the lack of ANY custom corner blocks in the construction of our hexagonal booth – see attached photos).

OMNI is many things to many people. For the rental company, it opens up a great deal more flexibility without making existing inventory redundant. For the rigger, it provides substantial structural gains again without making existing inventory redundant. For the designer, its three degrees of freedom offer an almost limitless range of possibilities without requiring custom fabrication. All of which makes the accountant a very happy man!

What is OMNI?

OMNI is a rotating, hinging, removable fork and spade truss connection system. Its mechanical features are as follows:

1/ It is removable. The fork connector is screwed into a barrel that is permanently installed into the main truss chords. As the truss for the range is essentially the same as our conventional truss range, it means that the connectors can be removed so that the truss can be used with conventional truss inventory with connection through the bolt plates. This feature also allows the sex of the connectors to be changed which offers an even greater degree of flexibility if for instance you wished to bring three trusses together in a ‘Y’ shape.

2/ It rotates and hinges. Whist a conventional fork connector could (and if you are smart, should) hinge, it can only do so in one plane. The unique design of the OMNI allows the connector to rotate thru 360 degrees, which allows trusses to hinge in either plane. Even more uniquely it allows whole series of trusses to come together as three dimensional, structural assemblies.

At a time when designers are required to introduce creativity beyond merely the look that lights alone can give them, there is an even greater emphasis on the design of spectacular rigs and structures. In the past this has required a great deal of expensive, custom and show specific fabrication. For the designer, OMNI offers a new realm of possibility and with its uniquely flexible connection all manner of 3Dimensional rigs and structures can be achieved without custom fabrication. Freed from the checkbook, designers can now explore their imagination with far less concern for their budgets.

The OMNI-p (p for perpendicular) connector addresses the importance of being able to create multi-truss 90 degree intersections without corner blocks, essential to the completion of the system, the use of OMNI gates to set angles, in conjunction with the OMNI-p connector give this flexibility. Any of the gates can be replaced with a truss, allowing all the flexibility of a conventional 6-way corner block.
